You should have little issue understanding key concepts if you've properly digested the first book. The Grouchy Ladybug is a good bridge between Carle's logical positivism and his later existentialism and nihilism. Carle's seminal work, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" explores themes of the Freudian psyche, transformation existentialist ideas and much more. Be prepared to spend some time with this book. It's also recommended you supplement every hour of reading this with 4-5 hours of commentaries/essays. The Very Busy Spider: An unfinished follow-up in the "The Very" series, published posthumously. A very difficult read for the beginner due to Carle's schizophrenic tendencies in his later years. Only for hardcore Carle fans! Have You Seen My Cat is his magnum opus. Do not expect to fully understand this book.
